Do you like yaw-dropping views and incredibly fancy cocktails? Well if you don’t, you’re crazy. There, I said it.
I’m not crazy – I absolutely love views (despite being afraid of heights, oh the irony!) and I can never say no to a good cocktail. And this is exactly what The Lui Bar offers.
Located on the top floor of the Rialto Tower (which used to be the tallest building in Melbourne before Eureka was built) it’s not obvious where it is unless you know where to look for it. There’s a desk furthest back in the lobby of the tower and when you ask for The Lui Bar, you’re shuffled into a black and neon blue elevator that takes you the 55 floors up so fast you’ll ears block.
The Lui Bar spans around the south side of the building and the walls are essentially all glass so you can enjoy views from wherever you sit. Quite amazing right?
Then what about the cocktails? First out they have an amazing drinks menu with paper pop ups on every spread. Yes, I might have been a bit pre-occupied to look at the design of it than to check out the drinks, but who wouldn’t?
Once you’ve taken your time to enjoy the menu it’s time to pick your choice of poison. This is a place where they take their cocktails seriously. Your waiter will even explain to you the elements of your cocktail and how it’s made. A bunch of them even require props, such as the Vodka Pour Over that filters your vodka through single estate coffee and ice. Apparently quite delicious.
My favourite: The Lola Montez Spider Dance Fizz. It was named after an erotic dancer that toured Victoria in 1855. She used spiders in her dress as an excuse to lift her skirts higher and share more of herself to the excited gold diggers in the audience. It comes with seasonal french champagne and mist. Yes, mist. It felt a bit out of this world but was really quite amazing to drink.
As you probably can imagine, it’s not the cheapest of places and the price of the cocktails are in the $20-25 range. It’s the kind of place I’ll go when I want it to feel a bit more spectacular and special. Like when you want to have a pre-dinner cocktail with that special someone on your third date or to celebrate that new job that you landed. Although, I wouldn’t mind heading over there every now and then on a non-special evening just to enjoy the view and sip on some every day luxury.
PS. For all you smokers and non smokers out there – at the far end of the place there’s a balcony. Go there and enjoy the mix of the view and the breeze in your hair. And don’t forget to bring your camera!
