Traditional US Southern fare is what many are calling the latest big thing in global food – with each region of the South owning its own unique style.
Joe’s Bar and Dining Hall in St Kilda, will celebrate the southern flavours with the Taste of the South Festival over the weekend of March 29 to 30, 2014.
The weekend menu will offer a taste from Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Virginia, Georgia and Florida.
Klaus and Fritz had the chance to try and test these southern flavours at a little pre-tasting event:
With dishes such as Jambalaya del Mer (New Orleans dish of tuna, prawns mussels & squid smothered in Creole tomato rice), Scallop Ceviche, Brisked Burgers (Smoked pulled brisked, maple smoked bacon, Montery Jack, sour dill pickles, caramelised onions, iceberg, chipotle mayo on a brioche bun), Alabama Fried Chicken (they didn’t want to tell us their special ingredients for the delicious batter, can you believe that!?) to the star of the menu BBQ Pork Ribs (smoked over apple wood and served with Texas mop), to name just a few, we were in for a real treat.
The ribs are smoked in their own smoker – a beast of a BBQ that produces the most juicy, tender and delectable ribs you’ve ever had.
Executive Chef Andrew Blake fell in love with Southern flavours after travelling the South-West on a search for the holy grail of ribs. He says: “Melbourne is slowly acquainting itself with the traditions of Southern style food and we’re excited to be driving the trend.”
Don’t think the Taste of the South Festival stops at the mouth-watering food menu though, no, no, no!
There are plenty of U.S. beers and Bourbons to accompanying the southern flavour,s as well as Cocktails such as the Hurricane and my personal favourite the Cajun Lemonade. Imagine a fruity cocktail that, thanks to Melbourne Hot Sauce, has a very spicy punch to it that’ll kick your taste buds totally by surprise.
For the daredevils out there a chilli-eating contest will be held on Sunday March 30. Show them what your taste buds are made of and have a go to chow down on the world’s hottest raw chillies.
