About an hour drive out of Melbourne, in the foothills of the Yarra Ranges, St Andrews opens its market 8am sharp every Saturday morning. Surrounded by towering eucalyptus trees, this peaceful place is well worth the trip. I never knew how much I needed to get out of Melbourne until we stepped out of the car, took a deep breath and took in all the greenery.
The grounds are fairly big and there are plenty of stalls offering a wide range of wares. St Andrews Market has a history of offering alternative culture, crafts, art, accessories and jewellery and during our visit we passed one stall offering rune readings, a few selling crystals and another one selling the most amazing handmade dream catchers I’ve ever seen.
If you’re not particularly interested in alternative stuff, don’t worry, there’s still plenty for you. Make sure to stock up with some fresh organic veggies from one of the veggie stalls, or if you’d rather grow them yourself – buy some seedlings for your garden at bargain prices. There’s also a whole lot of other things, such as handmade pottery, honey and organic beauty products, as well as a few vintage stalls displaying ranges of knickknacks and vintage finds.
If you get hungry, stop at one of the food stalls and enjoy a fresh, delicious falafel or a scrumptious sandwich wrap. While munching, wander the market or have a seat on the wooden verandah, overlooking the forest. Keep an eye out for the kookaburra that usually is spotted in the trees during market days.
There is a specific ambience at this market, completely unlike any other I have ever been to. I don’t know if it’s the stalls or simply that it’s surrounded by forest, but the feel of the market is not stressful, instead it is serene and leaves you in a peaceful mindset. It’s the perfect place to simply wander, coffee cup in hand, spark some conversation with a stall owner and get a bit of break from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne.Image gallery below. use the arrows to see more images from the market
