We blame the cold season for us not being as bar-going as we used to be. It’s just something with winter that makes us want to cosy up under a blanket at home, and savour our energy for going out for brunch (when it’s sunny! When it’s grey we simply hibernate). But Sister Bella is well worth a trip, even on a grey and rainy day.
Whenever I recommend it to people, I always call it a quintessential Melbourne bar. Why? It’s down an alleyway, down another alleyway, through an unassuming door, up some steps and poof, you’re inside this amazing bar. Walking past one of the alleyways you’d really not think there was anything down there, but hey, that’s Melbourne for you.
It’s more of an atmosphere bar, where the drinks don’t get in the way of getting a wee bit drunk and having fun. It’s straight forward, non-complicated and fairly priced. This makes the perfect backdrop of some casual after work drinks with a few (or more) friends. The interior could be called hobo chic, and everywhere you’ll find quirky details, from the skateboards hanging in the ceiling, to the posters plastered all over the walls.
If you get hungry, there are some decent and cheap bites available. Although there’s nothing wrong with the food, the main reason we head on over here, is for the relaxed ambiance and to share a jug of beer between friends, have silly conversations and laugh out loud. Our preferred way to spend a Friday night. And oh, it’s Friday today, so what about heading over to Sister Bella to try it out yourself? Bring along a bunch of people, a good mood, and prepare for a great night!
