Royal Croquet Club

Until February 1st the lower level of Birrarung Marr has been taken over by the Royal Croquet Club (RCC). It’s a pop up event, offering a whole bunch of food, drinks, entertainment and a wee bit of sport. Well, that’s if you can call croquet a sport, and if you ask us, that’s debatable.

Once there, there’s plenty to do. First off, there’s a whole bunch of food. Broadsheet is heading up their first Broadsheet Summer BBQ and offering food from Miss Chu, DOC, Meatmother and Mr. Claws. It’s BBQ at it’s finest. We especially recommend the buttermilk crab bun which made me pause my vegetarianism for pescatarianism for five minutes and boy was it worth it (I am sorry little crab, but I’d do it again if someone offered it to me).

In addition to stuffing your stomach full of food, RCC also has a bunch of themed bars and other entertainment. And don’t forget the full size croquet pitch where everyone is encouraged to participate. Although we didn’t on our visit (the regrets!), we’re surely heading back to do just that.

Among the music you can expect acts like The Kite String Tangle, Norman Jay MBE, Miami Horror DJs & Japanese Wallpaper. Keep a look out on their Facebook page for the dates.

This Australia day weekend the RCC expands even further! This weekend alone the club is expanding to include the middle level of Birrarung Marr, with the addition of some of Melbourne’s favourite food trucks. They don’t call it a Truck-A-Palooza festival for nothing. They also have a special headline guest performance at sunset. Eeek, the excitement!
