Rooftop Bar in Curtin House – a Melbourne Institution

You’ve probably already figured by now that we love rooftop bars. If you haven’t seen our previous articles, check out Naked in the Sky and Campari House Rooftop Bar and I can ensure there will be plenty going forward.

Today it’s time for the rooftop bar in Melbourne. If you haven’t been here yet, you simply have to make your way up the seven flights of stairs to take in the sprawling space on top of Curtin House that is Rooftop Bar.

This rooftop getaway is kind of as perfect as it gets. Smack in the middle of the city, with 360 views of Melbourne’s skyline, with fake grass and plenty seating, we couldn’t ask for more, really.

And as a bonus, it doubles as a cinema. You see that white box in the image above? Yeah, that’s it. During the summer, there are screenings of every type of film; current, classics and arty ones, and we’re quite certain you’ll find at least one that you’ll want to see. They bring out comfy deck chairs that you can lounge back in, eyeing that movie and sipping on some good drinks.

On to the topic of drinks. You’ll find the usual suspects on the menu. There is a bigger bar in the smaller part of the rooftop (furthest away from the screen) and most days you’ll find a secondary, smaller bar, with less available but faster service. Just make your pick.

We headed to the bigger bar and got ourselves a pitcher of sangria. And it was a great pitcher of sangria. Perfect for a hot summer afternoon, sitting on the fake grass areas, pretending you’re not in the middle of a bustling city, but in a meadow. Although, wait, who am I kidding? This place is so popular it’s almost always crowded. I like that though.

Want some food as well? There is an All Day Burger shack next to the film screen, serving up delicious fresh food every day up to the start of the screening. If you want something more proper we recommend you to head down one or a few levels in Curtin House and have some food at Mesa Verde (level 6) or Cookie (level 1).

What are you waiting for? It’s a beautiful summer day out there, just perfect for some rooftop hangouts. Just get over there, will you?
