This new kid on the block has only been around for about a year or so, but for that time, it has been my favourite hangout. I’ve actually held out on sharing it here. Sure, I’ve gone here plenty, but I wanted to keep it all to myself. I know, I’m very selfish, but hey, I finally saw the error of my ways and am sharing it now, ain’t I?
This cafe is, in my opinion, the perfect place for a weekend afternoon hangout with your partner or a few friends. The interior is casual cool and gritty, but it still has a homely feeling. The service is swift, and always comes with a smile, a bit of talk and a joke. Just the way I want it.
Have a seat inside, eyeing what’s going on in the kitchen or resting your view on that big and gorgeous bar. If you’re there for a beer or a crisp Sauv Blanc (try their house SB, it’s really, really good), then head upstairs for the (free) pool table! Or you can do what I usually do – walk through right through the place and have a seat in the back garden.
The open backyard is nothing less than awesome. Covered so you never get that harsh sunlight in your face, but still breezy. Also, there is plenty of space. The yard is littered with black and white photos and along one edge there’s one rad motorcycle that belongs to one of the owners. And ain’t it a beauty?
Sandra already mentioned the cold nitro brew on tap a few weeks ago, but here it is again. This time sprinkled with a little bit of milk, which according to the coffee drinkers were quite amazing. A pro tip: ask for some rum to go to it, it’s apparently heavenly. I went with my regular chai latte (so delicious!) but you’ll have to read through the text and check out that image gallery at the bottom for a picture of it. I have too many pictures from this place, okay?
Food wise, it’s all delicious. My standard order is this one – corn fritters with loads and loads of avocado. It looks like plenty, right? It damn right is. This meal will not just make you instantly happy, it will also fill you up for the rest of the day. Oh, and you should try their breakfast bagel too. That bagel might be the chewiest ever, and I absolutely love it.
NBHD Neanderthal really feels like a friendly, and freakishly tasty, neighbourhood place. It’s got the right kind of vibe that just makes me want to go back over and over again.
