Cheese and Wine!
Combine the two of them together and I’m basically in gourmet heaven.
Milk the Cow, located in Fitzroy St, St Kilda, is what I would call HEAVEN – a wine bar specialised in cheese.
So what’s on their menu:
You can either choose from their pre-selected cheese boards with two, three or four options of cheese with fruit paste and home-made crisp-breads. Or you immerse yourself in a taste adventure with their cheese flights with four nips of wine, beer or spirits matched to four fingers of cheese. (The menu changes on a weekly basis so you always discover something new). At around the $16-$20 mark, it’s good value that lets you taste a lot.
You can also take any of the cheese away, knocking $2 off the eat-in price.
At the moment they offer a special winter menu full of Fondue goodness. Let me tell you: I’ve been to Switzerland quite a few times so far and had some of the best Fondues there in my life and the Fondue of Milk the Cow can easily compete with the Swiss original. I highly recommend you try it yourself before winter ends!
The service at Milk the cow blows you away. With whomever I went there (you guessed it already I’ve been there quite a few times so far) they were impressed by how friendly the staff was and how much they know about their cheese. It really feels like they take pride in their product and want their customers to have the best experience possible! The interior is fantastic, spot on, interesting, not overpowering, a sense of style and fun (check out the udders for lights above the cheese cabinet).
If you haven’t booked a table you might want to be there before 7pm as the place is always very busy, even during the week.
So what’s my favorite cheese at Milk the Cow? It’s an italian truffled Pecorino but unfortunately not available at the moment. The truffled Camembert though is a more than good substitute for it to make me happy.
You can have a great time no matter what your budget, so do try it.
