I love Melbourne partly for all the quirky, cute, tasty places you’ll find down random laneways. I almost stumbled into this one heading for another little cafe in another laneway (actually, The Little Mule). I really liked that first impression (although I never went in, it was too busy), so when my lunch crew a week ago suggested we’d head there, I was more than game.
First off, if you’re there around lunch time, prepare for it being fairly full and possibly having to wait a bit for a table. We did. They said 15 min, but really, it wasn’t, it was just enough time for me to pop around the corner to get something I forgot. Just bring some good company, and stand your ground. It’s worth it.
Then step inside into Manchester Press. It’s got high ceilings, white walls and rustic table tops. Cram in with your company and try to talk over the chatter. That’s my only issue with this place – that the acoustics aren’t that great for quiet conversation. But hey, if that’s what your after – go somewhere else. But uh oh, you won’t want to because this place is nice. Like real nice. Let’s talk food.
You know what they specialise in? Bagels! I love bagels. No, really, I’m obsessed with them. But seriously, you love ‘em too, don’t you? And if you don’t, well, then I’m sorry to say, you might have a medical condition and should have that checked out by the bagel doctor.
Go for a classic cream cheese + salmon one, a Melbourne classic overflowing (!) with avocado or what I got – a most delicious one with blackened tofu. Yum! If you’re a breakfast person there’s also brekkie options, served over lunch as well. Because we all know that breakfast for lunch (and dinner! and snacks!) is the best kind of meal.
Have a sip of their coffee + chai as well. As per usual in Melbourne – it’s creamy (when it’s supposed to be) and utterly tasty.
