Someone said to me the other day that gelato is all the rage in Melbourne at the moment. The person also wondered what all the fuss was about. I probably looked a bit flabbergasted because A) I love ice cream and B) Gelato is frigging fantastic.
But offering plain gelato would probably be too, well, plain for Melbourne tastes. So even though I’ve been to plenty gelato places, on several different continents, I got surprised by pretty much every single flavour available here. Or what do you say about Mojito, Poached Figs in Marsala, or Panacotta with Fig Jam and Biscuit? My mouth is watering just writing about it.
Every week they bring in six specials. Check their website for what special flavours are in this week. If it’s something that you like, hurry over there as it’s only available for that week only…
The tastes equal the names, easy. The flavours are clear without being overpowering, fresh and absolutely delicious. It’s the perfect goal for a warm summer night stroll after a dinner or a pint or two in Collingwood.
The interior is as suitable to the area as the flavours. It’s a little bit gritty, with raw brick walls, which makes the place stand out in memory because for some reason, pretty much every gelato (or ice cream for that matter) place I’ve ever visited have been painted in some pastel colour. I don’t know why people think ice cream needs to be presented in a cute environment, because this works just fine!
My personal favourite is Bounty. If you love bounty you’ll love this ice cream. Subtle coconut flavour with chunks of chocolate in it. Absolutely yummy!
Take a moment to check out the gelato making process. The kitchen where they create it is in the store, and there’s a glass wall to it, so while enjoying your cone or cup, have a look to see the craftmanship in action. It’s actually quite amazing.
