Wandering through Melbourne’s laneways, with eyes wide open, you’ll discover the most amazing gems this city has to offer.
I was walking through Guildford Ln, in the CBD, admiring the old buildings and secretly wishing, I had an office space here, when I stumbled across Krimper.
Without knowing I had discovered the place some of my friends were raving for, for weeks. Only from having a wee look through the windows, I was smitten with the interior design and so I walked in, sat down and absorbed the calmness of this place.
The history of the space is clearly visible in the cafe – once a sawmill, a cabinet making factory, art gallery and even jazz club by night – old machinery bases embedded in the floor and the original lift car sitting ominously in the centre of the room. Krimper derives its name from furniture maker Schulim Krimper and showcases an original sideboard of him, in the centre of the cafe.
There is plenty of space to sit and chat so you don’t feel like you are squashed into some tiny space. The interior has a very calming feel to it and you don’t feel the rush of the city buzz in here at all.
Score the spot in the old industrial lift in the middle of the café and you’re going to be super chuffed. It’s cute, private and you can pretend you’re a kid playing tea parties with your friend, all over again.
Krimper offers a sophisticated all-day menu with influences from Japanese, French and American-style cuisines. Looking at the menu, you think you are at a top notch restaurant but you are “just” eating brunch. Brunch being given some dedication. It’s filled with unfamiliar options that get the tastebuds buzzing. I was surprised by the variety of vegetarian option on the menu and even more by how delicious it was.
The staff was super friendly and helpful with explaining the dishes and suggesting accompanying drinks.
This is a place worth visiting.
If you have friends, visiting Melbourne, take them to Krimpers and show them a typical Melbourne laneway gem, with beautiful interior design and cool tunes playing all day long.
