Living a gluten-free life can be a tough task when you want to have breakfast / lunch / dinner.
Thankfully a friend of mine is gluten-free and has opened my eyes for places that cater to those living a flourless life – so we’ve put together a list of awesome Melbourne venues that are gluten-free friendly.*
Auction Rooms – North Melbourne
As many places in Melbourne Auction Rooms already offers a good variety of gluten-free options on their menu. But it doesn’t stop there. They also have a pretty good selection of delicious gluten-free cakes and muffins. Let me tell you, the cakes are to die for!
Accompany they cake with a coffee (Auction rooms was voted as best coffee place in 2013!) and you are in for a real treat.
Bagelicious – Elsternwick
A bagel place isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind when looking for gluten-free breakfast options, unless… they also offer gluten-free bagles.
I mean who can’t say no to a bagel and it’s only a fair deal to include those of us who are gluten intolerant in the whole OMG-bagels-are-the-best-thing-EVERRRR rituals, right!?
Bagelicous offers those mentioned bagels and their fillings are just wonderful. I’m pretty sure there is a lot to choose from for the gluten intolerant.
Brick Lane – Prahran
Brick Lane is Stina’s go to breakfast place. She already took me there a couple of times and I’ve noticed almost half of the menu is gluten-free. It’s a heaven for any paleo people or the gluten intolerant. The staff knowledgeable about the different options for those with restrictions so don’t hesitate to hit them up for some suggestions.
Capitan Fracassa – Balaclava
This place is both for the dietary challenged as for the omnivores. One part of their menu is for meat lovers, the other half for vegans and vegetarians. Capitan Fracassa is proud to tell you that all food whether you are a vegan or not can be made gluten-free. Most of their cakes and sweet treats are also vegan and gluten-free. Yum!
Mamasita – CBD
The team at this popular, Mexican snack house are racking up some serious good food. And hey, they are a gluten-free friendly bunch here too. Aside from the toasted sandwiches you’ve pretty much got free reign over the menu of tacos, quesadillas, ceviches and tostaditas. Arriba!
Monk Bodhi Dharma – Balaclava
There’s about 20 per cent of the menu at this good vibes back-alley lurker that’ll be off-limits for those living gluten-free, but considering mist places you’d be lucky if the inverse was true those are some tasty, tasty odds in your favour. On weekends and during lunch time you’d better be early as the place is always extremely busy.
Sweetwater Inn – Prahran
Don’t be fooled by the rustic exterior and alternative crowds. This establishment will please even the most fussiest of people. What’s this trickery with the menu though? At first you think “dude food” considering the amount of pub-like meals and then you see “vegan” everywhere. Whilst there are plenty of gluten-free and vegan options to keep you happy, you can still indulge in something more rich and hearty like the BBQ pulled lamb shoulder bun w beetroot BBQ sauce, black tea and baby roast potatoes & onions.
Vegie Bar – Fitzroy
People are still clamouring for a table at this Fitzroy diner where the meals are cruelty free and the proof is in the chia pudding. They stand to their name and only serve vegetarian, vegan, raw and even better food for those of us gluten intolerant people.
Assuming the queues that are still forming in front of Vegie Bar you’d think they offer their gluten-free veggie burritos for free. But it’s simply the consistent quality of the products and the tasty food that makes people want to come back again and again.
