Fitzoy’s Vegetarian Mecca – Vegie Bar

Vegie Bar really is a Melbourne institution. I knew about this place way before we even moved to Melbourne, and once we landed we actually had our first dinner here, right up there in the window.

If you haven’t been, Vegie Bar is a completely vegetarian (duh!) restaurant. Having been a pescatarian for 15 years and a proper vegetarian for the last year, I always have a soft spot for the veggie places. Being able to pick anything off the menu is quite an amazing feeling after all. Especially when you rarely get to do that. Although, truth be told, having a full menu to choose from poses a bit of a challenge for me. I can never make my mind up, which means more options = more anguish. But still! The options! The excitement!

Anyway. The menu is varied and you can find essentially everything – from asian inspired cuisine to pastas, pizzas, wraps and raw food. The servings are generally large, filling and surprisingly cheap. As for the taste of the food itself – it’s good. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it will make you full, happy and not cost you a fortune, and that’s pretty darn good in my book.

Vegie Bar is popular. Well, popular is actually an understatement. It’s not uncommon to have to wait for a table. I have even heard of people waiting for as much as 2 hours. Though all the times K&F has been there we’ve gotten a table straight away. And if you don’t get a table directly, don’t fret, there is a really cute outdoor terrace where you can hang out and enjoy a drink while you wait.

As it’s very often full, the place has a busy, bustling feel to it. At times it gets a bit loud in the main room, but that’s part of the charm. It makes me feel like I’m in a food hall of the olden days (whatever that means..).

The interior feels very Fitzroy-esque. It’s a bit gritty and worn down with odd pieces of furniture together, the colour of the brick walls has started to come off and one wall is completely covered in posters. Most vegetarian places have a very distinct hippie feel, and it feels refreshing that the ambience at Vegie Bar feels more industrial and cool. Yes, I used the word cool and I will stand by it.
