Do you want to be a Berliner? – Berlin Bar

I have a soft spot for bars with themes. Specially when they go all in. And you have to agree with me that Berlin Bar does. First of all, finding it isn’t all that easy. It’s not much of a sign outside, and when you’ve located the right door you have to walk up two flights of stairs and ring on the green door bell outside a closed door. It feels a bit like being at a speak easy in the 30’s.

Once you get let in you arrive in west Berlin. This is a place of plentiful. There’s golden frames to the artwork, rich red colour on the walls and upholstered furniture in glossy fabrics. It’s a place of indulgence and the kind of atmosphere where I wish I were wearing pearls. And I don’t do pearls.

The cocktails have theme names (of course!) such as Luftwaffe Sour and Angela Merkel. I had high hopes that my cocktail would arrive wearing a power suit, but alas, no. Taste wise the cocktails are decent. It’s okay though. I’ll pay a bit extra just for the name and the ambience.

You might be one of the lucky few to get a seat in the more comfy west Berlin. You might have to walk through Checkpoint Charlie and head over to east Berlin. At K&F’s last visit east Berlin wasn’t used, but we took a quick peek. Compared to the west, east Berlin feels meager. There’s bunk beds to sit on and tubs are used as tables. And no, there are no upholstered chairs.

It might be a bit uncomfortable, but I don’t care. If I get to choose I’ll go to east Berlin any day of the week. I’ll still get to enjoy the nice cocktail selection but without the feeling I’m missing a pearl necklace.
