Even if I consider myself creative, I have to be honest I know very little about art. Although every time a friend drags me along to a gallery or an exhibition I like it. Therefore, when I recently passed NGV and saw a billboard of the upcoming show with David Shrigley and I immediately recognised his name I got a) proud of myself for knowing it and b) super excited about seeing it.
David Shrigley isn’t your regular artist either. My first encounter was through a friend back in Sweden (hey Elin if you’re reading this, you’re awesome and thank you!) who gave me a book filled with his drawings on some occasion years back. Even though I have piles and piles of books at home (I’m not kidding, I shipped 10 boxes filled with them when I moved to Australia), this one has always been at the top and always been leafed through every now and then. But then again, the name of the book is “Ants have sex in your beer”, and seriously, whoever isn’t engrossed by the title alone quite possibly isn’t my friend anymore. The contents live up to that awesome name as well. It’s filled with simple (wrong word, but whatevs) drawings, that are deliberately crude, dark, humorous and often human dysfunction and anxiety.
This summer NGV opens up a Shrigley only exhibition. It’s a comprehensive one and his very first in Australia (!), including new and recent works by the internationally renowned Glasgow-based artist. Prepare looking at drawings, paintings, sculptures, animated video, books and one major new commission for NGV International’s Federation Court. Also prepare for tragicomic narratives and sad/hilarious one lines.
This is one artist that I’m sure that everyone, even your footy lovin’ art hatin’ roomie will like. And it’s free, so no excuses now!
