Cronuts at Adriano Zumbo

I was out having breakfast with a friend the morning after what could be the most epic house party ever. We were a bit tired and despite the massive breakfast (at lovely Brick Lane) we still wanted something sweet. You know how it is, sometimes it’s like that sweet tooth completely takes over your body and leads you, even though you know you shouldn’t. This was such a day.

We quickly came up with a plan to go to newly opened Adriano Zumbo in South Yarra. Why? My friend was going on and on and on about cronuts. No, I didn’t misspell that. Cronuts are a combination between croissants and doughnuts. In this case, 1 + 1 = 3. Because the combo it’s not just ingenious, it’s incredibly delicious.

But before I throw myself head first into a love proclamation for all things cronut, let me tell you a little bit more about Adriano Zumbo. In the end I’m the one with a cronut obsession, as this place has a lot (a lot!) more to offer than cronuts.

Adriano Zumbo is all about pastries. After all, it’s a patisserie. When we got there around noon on a Sunday the queue filled the entire place. Hey, I got a bit scared and thought this would take ages. If the same happens to you – take it easy. It might be mighty many people, but the service is fast, impeccable, and the pastries well worth a wait.

The place itself is very different compared to any other patisserie I’ve ever visited in my life. It’s all neon, bright colours and chrome details. Anyone with a slight weakness for the 80’s will get a kick out of this. Even if you’re not a fan, the looks of this place are sure to stay put in your memory for quite some time.

Enough about the interior already! I want to get to the cronuts, but first I need to mention the abundance of delicious looking pastries, cakes, chocolate, gâteaux’s, macarons… I could go on forever, but let’s stop here, alright? I’m getting hungry and if I continue there is a high risk that I’ll eat pastries for lunch. Let’s just agree that there’s plenty stuff and all of it looks absolutely amazing. As I was on a cronut mission, the only additional pastry I tried was the macarons, which were great. They play around with weird flavour combinations that are equally quirky and tasty, like ‘Salted Butter Caramel on Toast’ or ‘Pandan Sticky Rice’.

So, finally, what we’ve all been waiting for. The cronut. How was it?

They do switch around the flavours on this one as well (a new flavour every Monday). The one I enjoyed had a Cookies & Cream filling. Let’s just put it like this: I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I said this was the best pastry I have ever had. I can’t think of anything else that comes even close. I’m contemplating going on an all-cronut-diet. It might not be very efficient, but it will be worth it.
