Captains of Industry

Captains of Industry is one of those places that you can easily mistake for a hip agency entrance or a night club/bar.
Thankfully for me a friend made it her mission to introduce me to Captains of Industry as she thought I would appreciate the concept of this place. And she sure was right.

Captains of Industry is an ambitious enterprise that comprises a number of businesses – from a barber shop, a shoe maker, and a shop fully stocked with japanese selvage denim – all branching off from the central café space in the large converted warehouse that looks down over the GPO on Elizabeth street.

Though it has a discernible hipster atmosphere, the vibe at Captains is more interesting than your standard Melbourne fashion hovel. The pared back workshop setup at Captains gives the place an interesting aesthetic and a notably “manly” air about it.

As an avid coffee lover, I get a decent caffeine fix at Captains and as an avid brekkie lover I get some decent sandwiches and brekkie options here as well. The menu is small, but there are some honest and humble dishes on the menu. But it is not the food that makes you want to come back.

It’s for one the atmosphere, for sure but it’s also because of the staff. There are few places in Melbourne where the staff is so friendly, helpful and want you to have the best experience while you are there.

It’s your perfect spot for an in between shopping break, for a chat with your friend, to get out of the hustle and bustle of the CBD without actually leaving it. Unique is an understatement, and the novelty factor alone blows you out of the water.
