Burch & Purchese

I’ve got a sweet tooth, my friends will all attest to me never saying to something sweet. I wish I could, but hey, for now I’m indulging it. Therefore when a friend asked on a (to be honest, fairly hungover Sunday) to join her and head to Burch & Purchese to try some sweet treats, I was jumping of excitement. Well, jumping might have been exaggerated, I did have a headache after all.

Anyhow, said and done, we crammed ourselves into her car and headed up Chapel Street and with a stroke of pure luck a parking spot just outside was empty. I was already getting in a much better mood. And it was about to improve even more.

Take a step inside this white-and-pink boutique and you are greeted by a cheery store – with equally cheery staff. We walked around, looked at all the goodies, sampled some pink marshmallows (which was airy and sweet, and the taste equivalent of the look of a glittery My Little Pony. And note, I do like those ponies), peeked into the back where you could see the glimpses of the goodie production, before circling in on the counter.

Burch & Purchese owner and chef is Darren Purchese. You might know him from Masterchef, where he has made several appearances. This place has quite a taste reputation to live up to. After all, the man’s been head pastry chief at a long line of fancy sounding places.

There’s plenty to choose from, one more exquisite than the other. And don’t even get me started on the taste combinations. They were unexpected, to say the least. Listen to this one: Smoked White Chocolate, Coffee, Cardamom, Lemon Cheesecake. I went for a more plain sounding Explosive Milk Chocolate & Raspberry.

Okay, okay. I know y’all just want to know the taste of things. Well I can tell you it matches how they look. It’s good. No, it’s more than good. It’s taste on the level when you aren’t sure you’re fancy enough to eat the cake.

The sweets at Burch & Purchese has an air of elegance to them, and it’s the kind of place I’d go to celebrate, or when I want something nicer than your regular cafe. Still – it’s the perfect place to bring your mum for a delicious sweet treat after a long lunch, or simply to round up an afternoon shopping spree with the girls. After all, there’s always a reason to treat yourself to something delicious.
