Tucked down at the end of Presgrave Place, Bar Americano is the sharpest tiny cafe / bar you’ve ever seen. And with tiny I’m talking about enough room for ten to twelve people at max, with no elbow room to squash in.
Yes, at times it really gets quite cozy in there. This bar is a beautiful place with black-and-white tiles on the floor, lots of polished wood and an idiosyncratic back bar.
The first time I went was early in the morning and I was craving a coffee. Without having a look at the menu, I ordered a soy latte and the barkeeper just gave me one of these looks and after taking a deep breath he told me: “Sorry, we don’t do soy!” And as it turned out, they don’t do skinny milk either (my friends request). “You can have a Caffe, Latte Macchiato, Espresso or Cappuccino… with proper milk”.
Ok, so I ended up with a Caffe and some fresh orange juice and it was superb.
I fell instantly in love with that little place. So of course it became one of my favorite bars over the time, and not only because I got to know one of the bartenders, who told me he used to work in one of my favorite Bars in Hamburg/Germany. And if it weren’t for the help of Matt Bax, who’s the owner of Bar Americano (and also Bar Economico), we would have had no pictures to show you, as the place has a strict “No photo” – policy. I know, very annoying for all Instagramers! No selfies with the cute bartenders!
Let’s forget about the photos though and focus on the most important part: Cocktails.
If you are a cocktail connoisseur, you are likely to have heard of some of the classics that Bar Americano serves up. Either way, these may just be some of the best cocktails you’ll find in this fair city. You can tell that they are made with love and passion for the drink by bartenders who clearly know their business. They take their time to speak to each patron explain what the bar is about, what the drinks are about and make you feel welcome and to enjoy your drink.
I guess all these little things combined make this place sophisticated and unpretentious at the same time.
If you can’t wait to make your way down to Bar Americano, you may need some advise:
1. Don’t wear high heels, ’cause they don’t have seats. Yes that’s right.
2. Beware of the crowd during the early evening on Fridays and Saturdays.
3. You also may want to check your way to Bar Americano on Google maps first. I’ve been there so many times but I still get lost sometimes.
Ok, enough talking, see you there tonight!
